Read an interesting discussion of the Apostle's Creed last night. It focused on the portion that states Jesus went to hell. That is a theological sore spot in most peoples eyes. It has led to some people changing the wording or dismissing the statement all together. I must say the article was well written and convincing that the writers of the creed's language meant burial, and not the hell as we would use it. So I see both sides of the issue. The Reformed faith is a historic faith and tries vehemently to uphold it's traditions that are Scriptural. Is it worth explaining to everyone that the writers meant burial, or should you change the wording. Tough call. Reminds me of our historic American documents. It is not doubt that we now use words much different than they did. I think it has led to many weaknesses in our government. But how can you control the language changes? I do think this is the huge difference between the Constitution and say, the Westminster Confession. The Westminster included the references and commentary that you can use to narrow down what their original intent was, something we can only debate with the Constitution. Interesting to think the impact if we had a summary of commentary from the original founding fathers.
