Zeb's Book Review

Charles Haddon Spurgeon was a famous preacher and a great servant of God. He was born in 1834, in Kelvedon, Essex. Charles had an amazing life and is very interesting to learn about.
One snowy morning he had a burning fire inside of him that wanted to know what he must do to be saved. He battled a snow storm and eventually found a dusty old church and sat down in the back pew. An old shoe maker was preaching in place of the normal pastor. Charles thought it would be a boring sermon but to his surprise the shoe maker said,” Look unto me, and be ye saved, all the ends of the earth,” (Isaiah 45:22). For the first time in Charles’ life, the truth of God and the power of the Holy Spirit entered the heart and mind of Charles Spurgeon.
The first step to Charles becoming a famous preacher was when he went to a little cottage to preach, to the people who lived there. Charles had never preached before but believed God would give him the right words to say. God did give him the right words. They liked him so much that people started to ask him to preach regularly and eventually Charles became a pastor in Waterbeach.
Soon after Charles became pastor at Waterbeach, he married Susannah Thomson and had twin sons. Their names were Charles and Thomas.
Many people came to listen to Charles preach. They didn’t have enough room at Waterbeach so they relocated. Still, more people came so they moved to the Surrey Music Hall. It was a very large and aged building and there was a lot in attendance. Just as Charles was about to start preaching for the first time, the building started to fall down. Everyone scrambled out and Charles fainted. The next morning Charles woke up and Susannah told him what happened because he didn’t remember. He was very upset about it because seven people had lost their lives when the music hall fell down. Charles never really got over that day. God again, provided enough money for a bigger church where they would stay until Charles preached his last sermon.
Charles became very ill from rheumatic gout and he wasn’t getting any better. On the Sunday of his last sermon many people came including the Queen of England. Charles died in 1892, in Nice, France. His last words were, “My work is done. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, and I have kept the faith.” (2Timothy 4:2).
Charles Spurgeon is someone who is worth learning about because he did something with his life that actually mattered. He is someone worth writing about because his story might make a person consider going to church. They could become saved, all because they read this book. You can learn a lot from Charles Spurgeon, but I learned that he always believed God would help him and watch over him. You can learn that God will watch over you and you don’t need to worry, like it says in Mathew 6:25-34.
My favorite part of the book was when Charles talked with an orphan who loved boats. Charles eventually bought him one. Later on, Charles built an orphanage that the same orphan came to and he ended up being saved. Then 20 years later he wrote Charles a letter that said Jesus was the captain of his ship. He told him he still had the same boat in his room.
I recommend the Prince of Preachers because it is a great source for learning about Charles Spurgeon and you will learn things you can apply to your life and actually use. It is also a very exciting book about Charles Spurgeon. It’s filled with great stories about how he brought people to Christ.
